The Business of Bird Control at Home

Tuesday, May 15, 2012 by Kathy Fritsch

plastic bird spikesBird control is widely used at hospitals, schools, airports, commercial and industrial buildings and the like.  Wouldn’t it seem logical to have the same concerns for the home?

Every year there is millions of dollars worth of damage to businesses and homes caused by the feathered adversary.  You can enjoy the beauty of the bird like most people.  They are part of nature and that is a beautiful thing.  When nature interferes in a hurtful way, however, it is not so wonderful anymore.

The financial damage alone is alarming.  The reason birds can be destructive is because of their droppings.  Droppings are very acidic.  Over time the droppings can eat away at many substrates, especially tar-based roofing materials.

Pigeons, sparrows and starlings are known to build their nests in the corners of the roofs, as well as in the rain gutters and eaves.  This is not the only reason that hospitals and the like are concerned about bird control on their properties.  Bird droppings are also associated with some series health risks, especially those who have immune disorders.  Diseases can be transported from place to place, so deterring them is series business.

Home is where you return at the end of the day for safety and relaxation.  Having bird control measures in place at the home is not difficult.  You do not need a maintenance engineer or a management staff to take care of it.  It can be a quick and easy weekend project.

Bird spikes placed at the peak of the roof will block and prevent the birds from roosting.  The plastic bird spikes come in a variety of colors such as black, brown, tan and brick red, which will blend in with just about any rooftop color.  The bird spikes will be virtually invisible to those on the ground.  The bird spikes have blunted ends and will not be a problem when installing.  They can be glued down, screwed down easily because of the pre-drilled holes along the base, or tied into place.

Make it your business to protect your home so that your home stays your sanctuary.

Pest Birds on Roof - Bird Spikes are the Solution

Tuesday, April 17, 2012 by Kathy Fritsch

get rid of birdsBirds become pests when they enter our human living and working space and make us vulnerable to the problems associated with pest birds.  The problems are structural damage to buildings and health and safety concerns associated with the pest bird nests and their droppings.  There are severe damages and economical consequences each year to the roofs of homes including structure damage as well as blocked ventilation systems.  Nesting materials can even become fire hazards.

Pest birds such as starlings, sparrows, crows and pigeons like to build their nests on the underside of roof corners and in the drains and rain gutters.  Bird nests can also block chimneys and ventilations systems, which can be the cause of fires.  Bird droppings are very acidic in nature.  They eat away at the substrates.  This is especially true with tar-based roofing materials.  The acid in the bird droppings will eat into the material and will eventually cause leaks.  Roofs have also been known to come crashing down with the weight and damage from bird droppings.  This is most severe, but it certainly started with just a few birds and their droppings, but it was allowed to accumulate.

Accumulated bird droppings do more than destroy property structures; they are also a known health hazard to humans.  More than 60 transmittable bird-borne diseases, parasitic organisms and fungus can be transmitted from accumulated bird droppings to humans.  The concern is brought about when the micro-organisms from the pest bird droppings are inhaled.  These organisms are inhaled and can lead to lung diseases such as Histoplasmosis and Cryptococcosis.  Nesting materials from pest birds have these sometimes fatal ailments as well as insects, mites and bedbugs.  It is easy to see where clogged ventilation systems are not only a fire hazard but a way for the diseases and bugs to spread these diseases through the systems.  Another deadly consequence to watch out for is when bird nests block the exhaust systems and can block airflow into the home or business sometimes causing a build up of carbon monoxide which is a very poisonous and deadly substance.

Bird Control Solution for the Roof

Bird spikes are a very easily installed bird control product that will help keep the pest bird off the roof.  Bird spikes work very effectively against pigeons, seagulls and crows from landing on the roof.  Bird spikes are virtually invisible from the ground when installed properly.  They are U.V. protected, sun and weather proof.  Weather can be extreme temperatures, but bird spikes can withstand temperatures from +310oF to -200oF. Plastic bird spikes are very easily manageable.  They come in two foot long sections.  They are available in three different widths that can be matched to the surface that they are intended for.  Plastic bird spikes come in a variety of colors.  They can also be matched accordingly for use on ledges, fence lines, window sills, beams, under eaves and canopies around the home.  Installation consists of screwing them down, tying or gluing, depending on the surface.

There are also special bird spikes made specifically for the gutter areas.  Bird nests are found frequently in the roof’s gutters, clogging up the intended flow and purpose of the gutters.  The gutter spikes simply clamp onto the lip of the gutter.  The clamps are adjustable and will fit any gutter size.  Gutter spikes are stainless steel and are also virtually invisible when installed correctly.

Before installation, the only requirement is to make sure the surface is clean.  If bird residue in on the roof or any surface, using a deodorizing disinfected is needed.  Like many animals, birds are drawn to the scent of their own waste.  Thoroughly eliminating their scent trail will also discourage the pest bird from coming back to old roosts.  An EPA approved disinfectant such as Microcide SQ is a broad spectrum hospital grade cleaner that disinfects and deodorizes a surface that has been soiled from bird droppings. It is effective against over 100 different disease causing viruses, yeast and mold and bacteria.  It is a very inexpensive product to have on hand even to wipe down the patio furniture if birds are around.  The USDA has approved Microcide SQ for both non-food and food surfaces.

Keeping the pest bird off the roof will most likely keep them out of the yard.  Birds will perch and roost looking for places to eat and nest.  If they are stopped from roosting and nesting on the roof with bird spikes, they will move away and find another high surface, most likely someone else’s roof, to congregate.

Bird spikes are not going to injure the bird in any way.  They are a safe and humane way to deter the birds from the roof to a different location.  Bird spikes simply create an uneven surface that the birds cannot land on.  Spring time when the birds are starting to mark their territory is the perfect time to take care of the problem before it becomes a serious one.

Physical Bird Barriers that Protect against the Pest Bird

Tuesday, January 24, 2012 by Kathy Fritsch
get rid of birdsThere are many people who do not care if there are birds in their yard.  Actually, there are some who try and lure the bird with bird baths and bird feeders.  But, if you are not one of those people and are disgusted with the bird mess that is accumulating, there are safe and humane bird control measures that will block the birds from making your home their bathroom.

Reasons to Keep Pest Birds Away

Besides the ugly mess that bird droppings create, there is health risks associated with the accumulated bird droppings.   Crows, for example, can be a huge problem.   They are a very intelligent bird species.  Even though pigeons, sparrows, geese and grackles can be a nuisance, crows can be especially destructive when they come into contact with humans and structures that are not built as bird houses.  Crows have been known to damage airports and planes, so imagine what they do around the home.  Crows cause tens of millions of dollars of damage every year to machinery, automobiles, roofs, ventilation systems and roofs.  The droppings are very acidic and eat away at many substrates.  The bird droppings can damage siding, insulation, air conditioning units to name only a few locations.  It is especially a serious situation if the pest bird builds nests in chimneys and ventilation systems.  This can cause the spread of disease and block the air-flow.  Bird droppings are host to over 60 different types of infectious diseases.  Get rid of the pest bird before it is difficult to get rid of the aftermath they can leave behind.

Bird Control Netting and Diverters

Bird control netting is a bird control measure that is put into place where the pest bird is known to roost and nest.  Pest birds can be a big disturbance not only in the home, but the garden as well.  A lot of pest birds are very social birds and will often flock to your trees. Bird netting as well as anti roosting bird control is necessary to protect fruit trees, garden plants and building structures.

Bird control netting on trees, bushes and garden plants is a solution that places the obstruction between the pest bird and your prize.  Bird netting is made from a U.V. protected polypropylene making it weather and sun resistant, effective and easy to install.  It is a versatile means of blocking a variety of pest birds as you can use a smaller mesh for your blueberry bushes, yet a larger mesh for tomato or zucchini plants.  It is practically invisible to the human eye and will not upset the aesthetics or functionality of the yard.  Placing bird control netting with scare diverters will protect against various species of pest bird.  Scare diverters over time might not actually scare the crow.  They adjust very easily to visual deterrents.  A mixing and matching of different bird control products is suggested with the crow.  Some birds, however, can be deterred easily with just scare diverters.  These pest bird diverters work for large and small pest birds.  They can be hung in fruit trees.  They can be placed sporadically around the yard using a simple wooden post or dowel with the diverters hanging from twine.  The movement of the light weight diverters with its shiny reflective surface and mock predator eye is what scares the birds away.  It is a very humane way to keep the birds away from the area.

There are also predator eye scare balloons that can be places strategically around like the scare diverters.  The scare balloons can be hung on the sides of the home, overhangs, balconies and patios.  Just like the diverters, the scare balloons have the design on the side that the bird believes to be a predator’s eye.  The bright colors and shiny surface confuse and frighten the bird and they will want to keep away from the areas where the scare balloons are placed.

Bird Gel, Bird Slopes and Bird Spikes

Bird control products that help keep the pest bird from hiding away, building a nest and roosting are transparent bird gel and bird slopes.  The transparent bird get is a non-toxic substance that the birds cannot stand the sensation of.  They will be forced to move on to a different area to roost and perch.  Bird gel is ideal for locations such as ledges, eaves, beams and any horizontal surface where the pest bird may want to land. It is easy to apply using a caulking gun.  It will not harm any domestic animals or humans.

Another safe option is the bird slope.  This anti-roosting and anti-perching deterrent will encompass most species of birds.  Bird slops can be placed under the eaves of the home where pest birds like to tuck their nests away.  It creates a “slippery slope” and birds will not be able to land on the surface, nor build their nests on them, therefore creating a secure barrier.

Bird spikes are a successful way to get rid of the pest bird around your yard and structures.  They will prevent the larger pest birds like crows, seagulls and pigeons from landing where bird spikes are applied.  They work by creating an uneven surface that the birds cannot land on.  They will be forced to move on to more desirable location.  Bird spikes, when installed correctly, are virtually invisible.  They are placed on fence lines, rooftops, beams, under eaves and ledges.  The surface can be flat or curved.  There are stainless steel, plastic and spikes that are made specifically for the gutters of the home.  Plastic bird spikes come in various colors to match the structures.  There is white, tan, brick red, black and gray.  They are easily tied, screwed or glued into place. When the bird spikes are secure, so will your backyard vegetation. The pest bird will not be able to perch and look for their next food source which would have been your garden.

All the bird control products that are humane and safe for the pest bird, as well as the humans that may come in contact with them, are very versatile and will be successful in blocking and deterring the pest bird from staying around where he is not wanted.

Bird Control Spikes for Tall Structures like Movie Theaters

Monday, December 19, 2011 by Kathy Fritsch
Get rid of birds with bird spikes

Summertime is the time for action movies in the theaters.  Kids are out of school and those hot summer afternoons watching a movie in the cool, air conditioned theater is a special treat.  Another creature who likes the action and the theater during summer is the pest bird.  What they like is the high structure of the movie theater.  When you are standing in line to buy tickets, you might notice the bird markings on the ground, especially around the corners of the buildings.  Hopefully, you have not slipped and fallen from the fresh bird droppings!  Or maybe you have been hit on the head with bird poop?  In some cultures that is a lucky thing.  Not so much so when you are ready to go into watch a movie but first having to clean bird poop off your clothing or from your hair.

Theater owners and managers need to be conscientious about the upkeep of the business.  However, their other concern should be the safety of the movie goers.  When theaters, in a lot of cities, are almost on every corner, people are going to choose to attend the clean ones.

Preparing to bird proof the building mainly consists of cleaning up any old debris or droppings.  A broad spectrum hospital grade cleaner that disinfects and deodorizes the surface is recommended.  This type of cleaner should be approved by the USDA and can be used for non food as well as food surfaces.  Areas to clean are the rooftops, near HVAC units and air conditioning units, ledges and window sills.  The cleaner is sold as a concentrate and is mixed with water.  You simply spray it on and wash it off.  Microcide SQ is a broad spectrum hospital grade cleaner that is EAP approved.  It also is effective against over 100 different diseases from bacteria, yeast, mold and viruses.

Once a thorough cleaning has taken place, it will be obvious where bird control products need to be implemented.  It is where the cleaning was needed.  Physical bird deterrents such as bird spikes, bird slopes and even bird netting are all options that will work well for the high structure.  A physical bird deterrent blocks the bird from landing whether it is just perching or roosting and nesting.  Bird spikes work well where large birds are the problem, such as pigeons, gulls, crows, vultures and raptors.  There are plastic bird spikes, stainless steel bird spikes, gutter spikes, girder spikes and mega spikes.

Plastic bird spikes can be applied to ledges, rooflines, awnings and canopies that may be around the edges of the building.  They are made of a professional grade plastic and are U.V. protected and sun and weather proof.  It does not matter which region the theater is in, from North Dakota to California, they are not affected by extreme temperatures.  The plastic bird spikes are non-conductive which means they will not interfere with electrical or communication transmissions.    They are easily installed by either gluing them down or they can be nailed or screwed onto the surface.

Stainless steel bird spikes can be used on the same surfaces and installed the same way as plastic bird spikes.  The stainless steel bird spikes fit any contour and have a patented Bend & Crush design and can bend 360 degrees.  Stainless steel bird spikes are often recommended by architects, contractors and also government agencies.

Gutter spikes are unique in they are specifically made for the gutters around a building.  Gutters are where the birds will try and build their nests.  The gutter creates a safe and secure area hidden from predators.  Where there are birds fluttering around, gutters should be bird proofed.  Gutter spikes have stainless steel spikes with a U.V. protected polycarbonate base.  They are secured to the gutter with “c” clamps.  They are sold in 2 food long sections and are 4” wide.  They are also manufactured using the Bend & Crush design.  Gutter spikes fit into all gutters and are quick and easily installed.

There are also special spikes made specifically for I-beams and girders.  They are sold in 3 different width sizes, 3”, 5” and 8”.  Girder spikes also have a U.V. protected polycarbonate base and are patented with the Bend & Crush design.  Girder spikes are also installed using “c” clamps.

Mega bird spikes are the tallest bird spikes available.  This bird deterrent spike would work well in a deep area where maximum coverage is needed.  The mega bird spikes, like all the other, can be easily bent and applied to a flat or curved surface.  The mega bird spikes have a non-reflective metal finish with the U.V. protected polycarbonate base.

Bird spikes are a permanent solution to an annoying problem.  All work the same way by creating an uneven surface, the spike aspect, which doesn’t allow the birds an opportunity to comfortably land where they are applied.  Applying bird control, whether it be bird spikes or other  bird control products, is very cost effective when measured against the cost of damage and repair to the building when there is no bird control measures in use.   Bird spikes are a safe and humane way to deter the bird and get rid of the bird without any harm.

Bird Deterrents Offer a Huge Pay Off

Tuesday, July 26, 2011 by Kathy Fritsch
get rid of birdsBirds are everywhere.  Some people even have bird baths and feeders in their yards to attract the birds.  That is fine if they are willing to suffer the consequences.  Businesses, however, have more liability to worry about.  Birds that tend to roost and nest on the buildings and structures turn the cute little song bird into a pest bird.

Every year, machinery, roofs, ventilation systems and structures are damaged and sometimes completely ruined by the pest bird and their droppings.  Millions of dollars is spent each year to repair and replace what the pest bird has destroyed.  Roof damage can be especially costly to replace.  Bird droppings are very acidic and eat away at many substrates.  Tar-based roofing materials are especially vulnerable to this.  It does not take long for the bird droppings to literally eat through the roof.  Rooftops are often where the pest bird will build its nests. They like to build their nests away from the weather elements and their predators, often times using drains, roof corners and rain gutters to build their nests and hide in.  This often times creates a water build up causing even more damage.  With the acidic bird droppings and water this can lead to a roof collapse with disastrous consequences.    Pigeons have been known to invade attics of restaurants and other buildings, building colonies of nests.  Over time, the sheer weight of their accumulated droppings has caused the ceiling to cave in.

Ventilation systems can also become clogged and blocked by the pest bird debris.  When a nest is built in ventilation systems, disease that the pest bird carries and transmits can spread through the airflow.  Another health hazard is when birds use fireplaces to nest and roost.  The threat to this is when the fireplace is eventually used.  Carbon monoxide is then a dangerous substance that can build up becoming deadly to humans and other animals.  If nests are allowed to be built near electrical boxes and machinery, fire is always a risk.  The appropriate bird control will save, most importantly lives, and also thousands of dollars of damage.

The corrosive droppings can also damage equipment, solar panels, insulation and air conditioning units.  Fresh droppings are dangerous as well creating a slippery mess for any who are near it to slip and fall.  The dust created by the dried accumulated droppings are equally as dangerous, if not more so.  The dust carries various diseases that humans can get by breathing in the spores that are in the dust which pose great risk to diseases such as Histoplasmosis and salmonella.  Bird control can prevent this type of situation from happening.

With proper bird control in place, pest birds can easily enter a large warehouse, factory and even airplane hangars and cause a lot of problems.  If the warehouse or factory is a food related business, the pest bird droppings will eat through plastics and contaminate the food that is already packaged.  Airplanes can be severely damaged when delicate parts of the plane come into contact with the hazardous bird droppings.

Businesses that have el fresco dining are at risk of losing customers if their bird deterrent measures are subpar.  Birds and their debris can be very disturbing to patrons who want to experience outdoor dining, even at fast food restaurants.

Bird Control Options

Bird Spikes/Bird Slopes/Bird Tracks

A common bird control product that used by many is bird spikes.  Bird spikes are stainless steel and plastic.  There are also spikes specifically used for girders and others for gutters.  Bird spikes are a physical bird deterrent that prevents the larger pest birds such as crows, pigeons, gulls, vultures and raptors from landing on fat or curved surfaces.  Birds spikes are a permanent solution that keeps birds from landing on ledges, rooflines, eaves, I-beams, awnings, canopies, light posts and signs to only name a few.  Stainless steel bird spikes are often recommended by architects, government agencies and contractors and a way to deter the pest bird.

Bird slopes are made of angled PVC panels.  The slanted slopes make it difficult for the bird to get their footing.  It is slippery and uncomfortable which will cause them to move onto another location.  They are ideal for ledges, beams and eaves or any other 90 degree locations where pest birds often land and roost.

The electric track is not as terrible as it sounds.  It does give off a mild shock to the bird when it tries to land on the surface where the track is installed, but does not harm the bird in any way.  It is completely humane.  Electric track could be used in place of bird spikes when you need the lowest type of visibility of a bird deterrent.  Bird spikes and slopes are virtually invisible when installed correctly, but the bird track’s height is only ¼” high at the very highest point.  It is very flexible and can bend 360 degrees without compromising the integrity of the deterrent.  It is easy to install and is highly successful in bird behavior modification.  The pest birds will not come back.

Bird Netting

Another type of physical bird deterrent is bird netting.  Bird netting is very versatile and is used for total exclusion of the pest bird.  Bird netting is effective smaller birds as well as the larger ones.  Often times pest birds will get into the hangars or warehouses.  Bird netting suspended up above is very effective in keep the pest birds from getting up into the I-beams and hiding away and nesting.  It is never too late to use bird netting.  If birds are already in the building there is a netting kit that will humanely capture the bird so that they can be released.  The netting kit is effective in capture most species of pest birds, large and small.  The netting that captures the birds is placed in the direct flight path of the pest birds.  They fly into the very thin, mist netting, flying normally.  It is also possible and sometimes necessary to use lighting or sounds to make the birds fly into the netting.

Visual Bird Deterrents

It is always a smart idea to have some type of visual deterrent along with a physical deterrent.  This way the pest bird does not get use to one type of product.  Visual bird deterrents come in different shapes and sizes.  There are scare balloons that are about the size of a beach ball, and there are smaller, flat diverters.  There is also a flash tape that comes in a roll.  These three visual bird deterrents all have a shiny reflective surface that disturbs the bird visually.  The scare balloon and the flat type of diverters have an imprint on the sides that the birds see as a predator’s eye which causes their natural instinct of fight or flight to kick in.  Hang them up along with a physical bird deterrent and they will fly away and stay away.

Being proactive and using bird deterrent products to keep the pest bird away will save thousands of hours in time and money, as well as keep everyone safe.

Swallows' Return Causes Structural Damage

Tuesday, January 18, 2011 by Carolyn Griffin

get rid of swallowsby Carolyn Griffin

Spring, the season of rebirth, renewal and regrowth, indicates that the short winter days are being replaced with longer and warmer days. With the blossoming of various plant species and the reawakening and return of animals, spring indicates new life—both plants and animals—being born. During spring, the infamous swallows return to warmer climates. However, with their return, they need a new home. Thus, they try to build mud nests in nooks such as above doors and in eaves.

Barn swallows and cliff swallows sometimes come into conflict with people because of their mud nest building habits, which are often attached to buildings. Cliff swallows nest in large colonies of up to several hundred pairs; however, barn swallows tend to nest as single pairs. Four basic conditions are needed by nesting cliff and barn swallows: a fresh water source for drinking; an open habitat for foraging; a supply of mud of the proper consistency for nest building; a suitable surface for nest attachment, such as beneath and overhang or ledge.

The best control tactic is altering the suitability of the attachment site. There are several ways this can be done: through the use of netting and using bird spikes. Both of these methods are safe for both birds and humans. Nest removal should be initiated at the first sign because it is illegal to remove nests with eggs of young swallows. Although nests can be washed down with a hose, persistent swallows may attempt to rebuild nests several times unless they are deterred with bird control methods.

Bird spikes keep pest birds from landing and roosting on flat or curved surfaces. This product will help you get rid of swallows and the product is available in a variety of sizes. In fact, there are many different types of spikes. Some examples include: stainless steel bird spikes; polycarbonate plastic bird spikes; bird gutter spikes; and the mega bird spike.

These products are both humane and safe for both the installer and the bird, and the spikes all come with a guarantee for effectiveness.   For example, the bird gutter spikes will fit into any and all gutters due to their adaptability. The polycarbonate plastic spikes are cost effective: they are half the cost of steel, yet provide the same strength.  In addition, the plastic bird spike is available in a variety of colors. Finally, the stainless steel bird spikes and polycarbonate plastic bird spikes come in a wide variety of widths.

In addition to the bird spikes, netting is an effective swallow control method and option. As with the bird spikes, bird netting is used for total exclusion of pest birds. The products have a ten year guarantee, and its strength and durability serve as an effective bird deterrent. Three types of bird netting are available: heavy duty bird netting, no-knot bird netting, and ultra-net plastic bird netting. Custom sizes are available upon request, and the products are easy to install and protect plants, bushes, and structures.

With the arrival of spring, many thoughts come to mind: warmer weather, outside furniture, barbecues, flowers in bloom, and birds in flight and nesting. As swallows return to the warmer climate and begin the process of nesting, you must be aware that the use of toxicants, trapping, and shooting are all against the law. This is because swallows are classified as migratory insectivorous birds under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. Thus, safe and humane bird control methods may protect your structures from having unsightly nests built.

Spring Has Sprung: Getting Rid of Woodpeckers

Monday, January 17, 2011 by Carolyn Griffin

woodpecker controlDuring spring, the transition between winter and summer, a period of renewal, rebirth, and regrowth occurs. Certain signs indicate spring's arrival, such as plants blossoming and animals becoming active again. In particular, birds emerge, and many seasonal hassles result.

For example, woodpeckers can wreak havoc on structures, which causes both costly and time consuming repairs.  Woodpeckers usually feed on insects found in trees or wood. In the spring, male woodpeckers mark their territory with a rhythmic pecking sequence, known as drumming.  In addition to claiming their territories, drumming also attracts female woodpeckers. Drumming is performed mainly in the springtime, and woodpeckers discontinue this activity once nesting behaviors begin.  With the arrival of pest birds, many products will help you get rid of woodpeckers.  Two easily available bird repellents are bird netting and bird spikes.

Bird proof netting is used for pest bird total exclusion and woodpecker control.  Most bird netting from Bird B Gone has a ten year guarantee, and netting products are strong and durable, an effective bird control method. Heavy duty netting is affordable and endorsed by architects, who specify the product as the number one bird deterrent. This particular bird netting is U.V. protected and both rot- and waterproof.

Another netting products is Ultra Plastic Bird Netting.  This easily installed product can be customized upon request.  Ultra Net Plastic Bird Netting protects plants, bushes, and structures. This long lasting product is durable, virtually invisible, and easily installed.

Bird Spikes, another product, keep birds from landing and roosting on flat or curved surfaces.   For ease in installation, the product is available in two foot sections in 50’ per box. In addition, the product is available in a variety of sizes. One particular type of spikes, the stainless steel bird spikes, are safe and effective. The product is guaranteed for ten years and humane: it will not harm birds or the installer. Stainless steel bird spikes are available in 1”, 3”, 5“, and 8” widths.

Polycarbonite plastic spikes are a cost effective solution as they are half the cost of steel spikes, yet the same strength. The spikes are made from unbreakable UV protected poly carbonite, and they come with a five year guarantee. They are available in 3”, 5”, and 7” widths in a wide variety of colors. Finally, gutter spikes have a ten year guarantee. This product prevents birds from landing on gutter ledges and fits into any and all gutters.

As spring approaches, many products will save your structure from costly damage. Effective, easy to install products will save you time and money and protect your structure.

Harmonious Bird Deterrents

Tuesday, December 21, 2010 by Kathy Fritsch
bird deterrents stop pest birdsIt is important to respect and protect all of nature that is around us.  There are harmonious ways to live with nature, even when nature includes the nuisance birds.  Pest birds such as crows, pigeons, sparrows, geese and grackles have many areas on this planet to gravitate towards.  Protecting home environments does not mean destroying the pest birds, just getting rid of the birds in the immediate area.

Bird netting is not netting that catches the bird but netting that does not allow pest birds access to the area that is being protected.  Fruit trees and vegetable garden are areas where bird netting works remarkably well.  There is even woodpecker netting that can be used on the sides of homes where the woodpecker is often causing damage.  Woodpecker netting is ¾” mesh, small enough to keep this cute, but pesky creature from doing anymore damage.  “Poly-Clips” are used to fashion the woodpecker netting under eaves and other areas.  Bird netting and woodpecker netting is lightweight making for easy installation.

Bird deterrent spikes are another low profile means to get rid of the pest birds that are causing havoc around the home. Bird spikes are safe for the pest bird and the installer.  The edges are blunt enough to not cause injury to the installer, but sharp enough to deter the pest bird from landing on the area where they are installed.  Bird spikes work well on any flat surface such as rooftops and peaks, ledges and window sills.  If you have a problem on a.c. units, they can be applied to tops of these.  Bird deterrent spikes work by creating a very un-even and uncomfortable surface where the pest birds will not land.  It then forces them to move onto another location.  Plastic bird spikes come in a variety of colors so as to blend in aesthetically with the home.  There are also stainless steel bird spikes, as well as gutter spikes.  The gutter spikes help keep birds from nesting in the gutters which clogs the gutter and drains.

Bird netting and bird spikes are both virtually invisible when installed properly.  If help is needed with installation, a professional bird control company will have certified bird control product installers to assist with any questions and concerns you may have. It is possible to live harmonious with nature and not harm the pest bird by having humane bird control in action.

Winter Backyard Pigeon Deterrents

Friday, December 10, 2010 by Kathy Fritsch
get rid of pigeonsThe feral pigeon puts a capital “P” in the term Pest bird.  Large numbers of the pest pigeon appear in almost every city across the country.  Pigeons are monogamous birds.  Early winter is when the single pigeon starts a courtship with his future mating partner.  Late winter is when they start to build their nests followed by their first brood in the spring.  In warmer climates, breeding can occur year round.  Winter is not the time for dormant attention to backyards.   Large numbers of pigeons creates a large amount of pigeon poop.

Pigeon poop contains a high amount of uric acid which is extremely corrosive.  Pigeon poop is also full of fungal agents, bacteria and ectoparasites which can be a serious health threat to humans.  Millions of dollars in damage is reported each year related to pest bird droppings.  Pigeon poop and nest debris can damage buildings, back up gutters and drains and cause slippery areas on walkways causing slip and fall incidents that could otherwise be avoided.

Bird control products can reduce, if not eradicate the problem caused by the pest pigeon.  Bird deterrent spikes are among one of the most successful bird control products that will get rid of pigeons and other pest birds.  There are flexible stainless steel spikes and plastic bird spikes.  They work by creating an uneven surface discouraging the pigeon from landing.  They are ideal for ledges, chimneys and patio covers.  They are easy to install and are a safe and humane way to get rid of the pest pigeon from landing on the home and backyard structures.

An equally effective means of deterring the pest pigeon is bird repellent netting.  Bird repellent netting can be installed in courtyards, rooftops, garden plants and fruit trees.  Bird netting is an impenetrable barrier against the pest pigeon.  The polyethylene, U.V. protected mesh comes in a variety of mesh sizes for protection against the smaller pest bird such like the sparrow as well as the bigger pigeon.

Both bird spikes and bird netting are virtually invisible when properly installed.  It will not only protect your home and backyard during the winter months, but many seasons to come.  Protecting your home from the damages the pest pigeon can leave behind will not only gain you peace of mind, but save you dollars annually in repair and clean-up costs.

Do Bird Spikes Work?

Friday, December 3, 2010 by Kathy Fritsch
get rid of birds with bird spikesA common pest bird problem around the home is birds sitting on roofs and balconies, railings and fences.  They wake you up with their non-stop commotion at dawn and leave their poop behind for you to clean up.  Many homeowners have this problem and are unsure how to best deal with it.  Fortunately, there is a simple solution to this dirty problem.

Bird deterrent spikes are a successful method of bird control.  Bird spikes are one of the most cost effective means to get rid of the pesky birds.   Bird spikes sound as if they might stab and harm the bird, but be assured that bird spikes are quite a humane bird deterrent product.   They are harmless to the birds and to those installing the spikes.  Bird spikes work best with the larger pest birds like the crow, pigeon and seagull.

Sturdy polycarbonate plastic bird spikes come in two foot long sections.  The widths can vary depending on the size of the area they need to be applied to.  They are offered in a variety of colors to go with the color of your home and structures.  They are virtually invisible from the ground when applied correctly. Installation advice as well as product advice can be found at a pest control company that is certified in bird control installation.   There are stainless steel spikes as well as gutter bird spikes.

How bird spikes work is simple.  Bird spikes create an un-even surface which makes it extremely difficult for them to land and fluff their feathers.  They will move on to find a better landing spot to roost and perch.  It is important to keep birds away as the build-up of bird poop creates an unsanitary condition and can create various kinds of health ailments in humans.

The principle that applies to bird spikes is to keep them away from the area.  Make it uncomfortable for them and they will go elsewhere.  The principle could easily apply to all unwanted company couldn’t it?

Home Under Siege from the Pest Birds?

Friday, December 3, 2010 by Kathy Fritsch
pest birdsThe problem with pest birds is their poop.  Bird droppings that accumulate can become infected with over 60 different diseases.  Some of the diseases cause serious respiratory ailments while others cause influenza like symptoms.  Illnesses caused by bird poop can even amount to death.   Bird droppings not only harm humans, but will create a large bill when the bird poop corrodes paint, wood and even metals.   The corrosive element of the bird droppings creates lasting affects that can be deterred.  Bird deterrents are essential when the pest bird has taken over your home as their own.

Bird Deterrent Options

Visual bird deterrents are your first defense against the feathered intruder.  A visual distraction will first confuse and then agitate the bird causing them to move to a different location away from the irritation. Visual deterrents include bird diverters, flash tape and scare balloons.  Both bird diverters and scare balloons have mock predator eyes on a shiny reflective surface.  The birds see the visual annoyance and will flee the area and want to avoid it in the future.  Bird diverters and scare balloons hung right in front of the area where they congregate is most effective.  This can be in trees, along patios, the side of the home, eaves, gazebos and any overhang.  It even is successful when used on boats and boat docks.  The scare balloons can float in pools and hot tubs as a bird distraction as well.  Make sure they are made of durable plastic to withstand the outdoor elements of the seasons.  It is also suggested to move them around from time to time so the pest birds do not become use to them, therefore, reducing the scare factor of the bird deterrents.

Physical Bird Deterrents are a way of keeping the unwanted birds from landing or entering an area.  Places such as flat surfaces like the roof and ledges, window sills are best protected using a physical bird deterrent such as bird spikes.  Gutter spikes protect the gutters and drains from pest birds building nests in the hidden away area.  Bird netting placed over blueberry bushes, fruit trees and gardens are a bird barrier that is sure to protect the fruits and vegetables from being eaten by the birds.   Physical bird deterrents will be a strong barrier against the pest bird, but virtually invisible to the human eye if installed correctly.  Plastic bird spikes which come in different colors will blend into the visual aesthetics of the home.  Bird netting comes in different mesh sizes and blends in well with the landscaping.

Sound Bird Deterrents are devises that mimic the sounds of predators and warning calls from the pest birds.  The units are easily programmed to a specific species of sound or can be put on a setting to play a variety of species of bird calls.  Sound or sonic bird deterrents work well in large open spaces and with added speakers can cover up to six acres.  Orchards and vineyards would be wise to use sound deterrents to cover the large area of land.  The sonic devices are made of sturdy materials that are weatherproof.

Bird deterrent options that play on the pest bird’s senses will successfully keep your home from being attacked by the bird looking to roost, nest and eat at your home.  The money and time spent to install a bird deterrent system is well worth the savings.  In the long run it will save you time as well as money.  Thousands of dollars are spent each year by homeowners on repairs and clean-up from the damage left behind by the pest bird.  Most bird deterrents are easy to install while others may require an expert.  Installation advice can be helpful from your local pest control company certified in bird control product installations.

Do You Need Bird Repellent Spikes?

Friday, December 3, 2010 by Kathy Fritsch
get rid of birds with bird spikesIs there wood or paint around your home that has corroded from bird droppings?  Are there slippery areas near your walk ways or in your back yard on the cement?  Is your Bar-B-Q lid spattered with white bird droppings?  Are birds roosting on your rooftop and peaks?  Have the gutters become clogged with bird nest materials?  If so, you need bird repellent spikes to get rid of the pest birds.

There are health problems created by pest birds and their droppings.  Birds are known to carry an array of serious diseases.  There are over 60 known diseases.  Histoplasmosis is one that is potentially a fatal lung disease.  There is also the West Nile Virus that is carried through fleas and mites that attach themselves to the pest bird.  Bird droppings that are allowed to accumulate will cause these diseases to be more detrimental to humans.  Most pest birds defend their areas once they inhabit them.  Putting a bird control method in place will save time and money in the long run and will ensure a safe environment for all.

If you have problems due to the pest bird, bird repellent spikes are a necessity.  This simple bird control method has proven successful for many years.  Bird repellent spikes keep the feathered foe from roosting and landing on your roof, patio cover, ledges and beams and many other areas pest birds like to call home.  Bird repellent spikes are safe and humane for birds and humans.  They are easily installed by homeowners. Bird spikes are very versatile.  This type of bird repellent is designed for a wide range of pest bird species including pigeons, gulls, raptors, vultures and crows.

Bird repellent spikes work by simply not allowing the pest bird to land and maneuver their wings on the bird spikes.  This bird deterrent basically makes it impossible for the pest bird to roost where the bird spikes are installed.  This causes them to fly away in search of a better home and food source.  The stainless steel spikes come in 1” to 8” widths and 2’ sections.  They can be easily glued down, screwed in or nailed down on almost any surface.  When installed properly, they are virtually invisible.  The plastic bird spikes come in a variety of colors to enhance the invisibility and to blend in with the structure they are being adhered to.  The bird spikes are very flexible making them useful for curved areas as well as flat.

Gutter spikes are another smart bird control product that keeps the pest birds from clogging the gutters and drains.   Large pest birds such as pigeons and crows like to build their nests in the gutters.   Gutter spikes are attached using a “C” clamp making them useful for all sizes of gutters.  They come in 2” long and 4” wide sections.  It eliminates access to the gutter by creating that un-even surface that the pest birds will not be able to land on.  Bye bye birdies.

Pest Bird Control Strategies

Monday, November 29, 2010 by Kathy Fritsch
get rid of pest birdsPest birds roost and nest on buildings.  They roost and nest on building ledges, niches on roofs, signs, gutters and the like.  A solid pest bird control strategy will prevent rooftop damage, clogged vents and other property damage from the droppings of the roosting nuisance birds.  Bird control methods will prevent pigeons, sparrows, starlings, crows and gulls from invading your property and making themselves at home.

There is no need to harm our feather foe.  Fortunately there are a wide range of bird control strategies available to keep birds at bay without posing any danger of harm to the birds or humans.  There are four commonly used pest bird control strategies:

Bird Deterrent Netting

Bird deterrent netting is a very versatile means of bird control.  It can protect areas including the roof, fruit trees, berry bushes and vegetable gardens.  The netting is made from a very light weight U.V. polypropylene.  It will last long and is extremely easy to install.  It is a very low profile physical barrier against the pest bird.  It is virtually invisible and would not disrupt the aesthetics of your garden and yard.

Bird Deterrent Scare Tactics

Using scare tactics together with bird deterrent netting would double your success at bird control.  A solar bird repellent would be a capable bird control device for the rooftop or patio covering.  The solar bird repellent is inexpensive and easy to set up and use.   Its solar power source gives extended use, even throughout the night time. The action of the 2.5’ telescoping “arm” spinning around merely scares the birds away.  It can be that effortless.  Another scare tactic is a scare diverter that can be hung around the home or in the trees.  Diverters made in the form of an iridescent foil eye will scare birds away.  The “foil eye” appears to be a predator to the pest birds.

Bird Deterrent Spikes

Bird deterrent spikes can be placed on any flat surface such as the roof edge and peaks of the roof.  They can also be mounted on air conditionings units and posts or any area where the pest bird roosts and lands. Plastic bird spikes come in a variety of colors so they will easily blend in with the structure they are applied to.  The plastic and stainless steel spikes mount easily by either gluing, screwing or tying them down.  It is important to choose the right size spikes.  For example, if your ledge is 5” wide you would need to get a 5” wide spike.  If the ledge is 10” you can install two rows of 5” spikes.  Make sure that there is no gap larger than 1.5” or the pest bird will be able to get around the spikes.  The bird deterrent spikes simply make an uneven surface that the pest birds cannot land on forcing them to fly away and find a better place to roost and perch.

Bird Repellent Sound Devices

Bird repellent sound devices such as a sonic unit can be easily installed and programmed.  It is ideally used in conjunction with visual bird deterrents such as balloons and diverters.  The sonic devices are very easy to program.  They play a range of distress and predator calls from over 20 different types of species of birds such as the pigeon, crow, starlings, grackles, woodpeckers and sparrows to only name a few.  When the actual pest bird hears the programmed calls, their natural instincts to fly away from danger make them do precisely that.  They think they are being alerted to danger and fly away.

With little effort or time, simply deterring the pest birds course of flight by implementing  bird control strategies gives your home protection from the pest bird and the damage they can leave behind.  Pest bird control strategies are humane and safe for all.

Bird Deterrent Pigeon Spikes

Thursday, November 18, 2010 by Kathy Fritsch
bird deterrent spikesThe feral pigeon is often considered a pest or even a vermin.   When the feral pigeons encounter people, it usually leads to conflict.  They are known for transmitting the bird flu.  A big concern is also the damage they do to property, and causing pollution from their excrement.   The year-round food supply in most city and urban areas facilitates their continuous breeding.  They will lay eggs up to six times per year.  Depending on their food source and nesting ease, their numbers can build quickly.

The pest pigeon is remarkably good at spotting access points; loose tiles on roofs and ledges, gutters, air conditioners and any external ledge.  Pigeons prefer to roost on level surfaces.  The most effective bird control method is a structural modification that makes it difficult for birds to roost comfortably on the building surface.  One way to keep the pest pigeon from landing and roosting near your home or building is to install bird deterrent spikes.  These plastic and stainless steel bird deterrent spikes offer a virtually invisible and humane way to keep the nuisance pigeon from landing on your roof and ledges, therefore eliminating their droppings from piling up.   The bird deterrent spikes work well on any flat surface where the pigeon roosts. This also includes patio covers and the tops of light poles.  Instillation of bird deterrent spikes takes no time at all.  The pigeon bird deterrent spikes can either be put on using adhesive or attached with screws.  Plastic bird deterrent spikes are very versatile.  They come in a variety of colors to match the structure when they are being applied.  There are 3 different width sizes, from 3” to 7.” The 3” to 7” strips of spikes act as a prickling barrier to exclude birds from the surface without harm.  Bird deterrent spikes are a definitive bird deterrent for pigeons.

Applying the bird deterrent spikes before the pest bird can cause damage is recommended.  Once there is excrement build up, the cost of the damage and clean up would be drastically more than installing the simple bird deterrent spikes.  Pigeon droppings deface and deteriorate buildings.  Large amounts of excrement produce an objectionable odor.  It is particularly important for health purposes to not allow the pigeon droppings to accumulate.  Pigeons carry and spread diseases to humans as well as livestock through their excrement.  They can transmit pigeon ornithosis, encephalitis, cryptococcosis, salmonella food poisoning, and several other diseases.  Also, under the right conditions, pigeon excrement can harbor air-borne spores of Histoplasmosis, a systemic fungus disease that can infect humans.    This disease can be especially serious and more easily obtained by those with compromised immune systems.

The no mess installation of bird deterrent methods such as bird deterrent spikes will help keep away the mess caused by pigeon droppings.   Bird proof your property to get rid of the pigeons and to halt any potential damage to your health and home.

Winterizing the Home with Proven Bird Deterrent Methods

Thursday, November 18, 2010 by Kathy Fritsch
bird deterrents for your homeFall and winter months are the perfect time to bird proof the home.  The baby birds from spring have left the nest, and the pest birds are searching for that perfect roosting spot to start the whole cycle over.  Bird deterrent action must be done when there are no young birds in the nest.  Most birds, pests or not, are protected under the law, and it is prohibited to disturb active nests.  The idea of birds making a home on your property may seem charming, but the damage to property and health from pest birds’ nests and droppings can be fairly detrimental.  Making installation of bird deterrent products a priority will ensure the wellbeing of the household as well as the home and structures around the home.

A key reason for bird deterrent proofing the home is to keep the family healthy.  Birds that have been allowed to nest accumulate a build-up of viruses, bacteria and fungal matter from the bird’s droppings.  The best way to do away with this problem is to stop the nesting before it starts.  Determine areas that are prone to nesting birds.  The backyard patio is a known area that is susceptible to roosting birds. The patio roof is a great place to mount a solar bird deterrent repeller.  The bird deterrent repeller can be mounted on either angled or straight surfaces very easily.  It scares the pest birds away from the area by the continual movement of the long telescoping rods which have iridescent red foil flash tape at the ends of the rods.  The constant sweeping movement does not harm the pest bird, but distracts them from making the backyard patio their winter refuge.  The red foil flash tape also frightens the birds away from the area and can be tied to the patio cover, or a nearby tree or bush creating the perfect optical distraction zone.

Another frequent area for birds to roost is under the eaves near the front entry way or in the rain gutters.  It is very important to take action to avoid carrying any droppings that the pest birds leave upon the entry walkway.  Shoes can pick up the droppings and the bird droppings can be carried into the home.  Breathing in the fungal spores from disturbed nests and droppings can be quit detrimental to one’s health.  Upper respiratory ailments such as Histoplasmosis are quite dangerous.  A very easy and economical way to keep the eaves free of roosting birds is the use of bird slopes and transparent bird gel.  Both bird deterrent solutions create an extremely uncomfortable landing spot for the bird.  The bird slope creates a “slippery slope” that birds cannot land on.  Installation is quick and the bird deterrent slopes can be painted to match the exterior of your home.  A transparent bird gel creates a very sticky surface which birds hate.  The gel is virtually invisible and is non-toxic to people, domestic animals and the pest bird.

Installation of gutter bird spikes will keep the gutters free from the possibility of the birds building their nests there.  After clearing out any debris from the gutters, just connect the spikes by using clips. Taking these precautions during fall and winter will save you time and hassle once spring rolls around again, and you are outside enjoying a family barbeque.  Cleaning up the area after a pest bird has made his home would be much more labor intensive.  The structural damage to the home from the uric acid released from the bird’s droppings would also be more expensive to repair and take much more time than installing proven bird deterrent methods such as solar bird deterrents and bird repellent gels and bird repellent slopes.

Bird Deterrent Options for Pigeons

Monday, November 15, 2010 by Kathy Fritsch
pigeon control productsThere are over 300 different types of species of pigeons.  The pest pigeon adapts quite well to city environments.  There are many sources of food for them, stale bread from restaurants and supermarkets.  Berries and grass seeds from yards, gardens and parks.  The pest pigeon is a scavenger, and where there are people they are sure to find leftover food.  Because of the year-round food supply for the feral pigeon, they will breed continuously, laying eggs up to six times per year.

Why deter Pest Pigeons?

Pigeons become pests when they enter our living and work areas, and make us vulnerable to the health problems linked with their nests and droppings.  We can easily get rid of the pest bird from our own properties using safe and humane bird control products.  There are two main reasons we do not want to support this bird to nest and roost near the home; damage to property and to the health of humans.

Pest birds cause millions of dollars each year in damage to homes and businesses.  Pigeons as well as other pest birds often nest on roofs.  They will also nest in chimneys and rain gutters.  Pest birds can easily block the drainage system on a home or business.  Pest bird nests create a grave problem if they are built near any electrical wiring.  The nests can be highly flammable and create a fire risk.

The droppings of these birds are the most visible and severe problem.  Research has found over 60 transmittable bird-borne diseases that can be dangerous and even fatal to humans.  The diseases are transmitted by inhaling the micro-organisms from the droppings in the nests and along the building or ground, if the droppings are allowed to accumulate.  One identified lung disease is histoplasmosis.  It can cause flu-like symptoms but can be more perilous for those with immunodeficiency disorders.  To lessen these airborne infections and to protect your property structures, having an effective bird control method in place is needed.

There are effortless, efficient, and inexpensive bird control methods on the market.  Whether you choose physical bird deterrents, sound deterrents or visual deterrents, safety needs to be the key to bird proofing.

Physical Bird Deterrents

Physical bird deterrents make it so the bird will not want to land on a surface.  Bird deterrent spikes are ideal for protecting rooftops, ledges, or any other flat surface.  They are effortlessly installed by either securing them down with adhesive or screws, depending on the surface.  Plastic bird deterrent spikes can be as durable as steel bird deterrent spikes.  Both are virtually invisible once installed.  They come in a variety of sizes and colors and are weather resistant for long lasting use.

Sound Bird Deterrents

A sound bird deterrent device works well in larger areas where the birds nest and roost in trees.  Sound bird deterrent devices scare away the pest bird by intermittently playing predator and distress calls.  The units can be programmed for over 20 different types of bird calls.  The sound can be heard up to 1-acre.  The sounds will not harm the pest bird; just persuade them to pass on by.  The bird deterrent sound devices are very easy to operate and are very cost effective.

Visual Bird Deterrents

Visual deterrents merely create a visual illusion which makes the pest bird think they are face to face with their predator.  There are hanging visual diverters that can be placed around the overhangs on patios or homes, and can be hung in any bush or tree.  The durable plastic diverter has an iridescent foil eye that scares the pest bird away.

Pigeons and any pest bird can be humanely deterred from causing damage to the home, and the health of those in the home, by being proactive and installing bird deterrent products.

Home Use of Bird Deterrent Gutter Spikes

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 by Kathy Fritsch

gutter bird spikesRain gutters at home are an important area to pay attention to before the rainy season takes place.  The gutters are the runoff route from the home’s roof, redirecting the water away from the house.  By redirecting the rain water away from the house, the siding, windows, doors and foundations are being protected from water damage.  The rain gutters on the top of the roof even help prevent flooding in basements.  In order for the gutters to work properly, they need to be free of leaves and debris.

The debris often comes from the pest birds.  Crows, pigeons and sparrows find the rain gutters to be a perfect spot for roosting and building nests.  This creates a bird barrier, but not the type of bird barrier needed.  Instead of the bird debris being the barrier, bird deterrent gutter spikes can be installed as a successful bird control barrier so the water can run freely through the rain gutters.

Bird deterrent gutter spikes are made of 4” wide, stainless steel spikes.  They are very easy and safe for the average homeowner to install themselves. The bird spikes are attached to the lip of the gutter using adjustable clamps that fit any gutter size.   The gutter spikes come in 2 foot long sections, and once installed they are virtually invisible.  The bird deterrent gutter spikes work by creating a jagged surface that makes it impossible for the pest bird to land, and they simply move on to a different location.  When preparing the rain gutters for installation of bird deterrent gutter spikes, make sure to wear protective clothing and protection over your mouth and nose.

There are sanitary and health reasons, as well, to deter pest birds from the property.  There will be more than water damage to the home if pest birds are allowed to roost and nest on the home.  Bird droppings can be damaging to paint, wood and even metals.  The acidic condition of the bird droppings eats through the materials.  Bird droppings are quite corrosive.  Besides unsightly and corrosive to home materials, bird droppings are harmful to the health of the homeowner.  More than 60 different types of transmissible diseases have been associated with birds and their droppings.   Upper respiratory problems occur from histoplasmosis and cryptococcosis infections.  Bird roosts can harbor parasites that may invade the home, bringing in such bugs as pigeon nest bugs which are related to the bed bug.  The home will also be susceptible to soft ticks and biting lice.  These pests may fly through windows and crawl through cracks to enter the home.

Bird deterrent gutter spikes will protect the home even when it is not raining.  For a small investment of time and money, using a trusted bird control method will alleviate worry.

Bird Proofing the Roof for Winter

Wednesday, October 6, 2010 by Kathy Fritsch
bird proof roofsBirds have been known to tear up pieces of roof flashing and live in the gabel soffet’s of the home.  There are ways of preventing this from happening.  If it has already happened, removing a nest can be a little tricky.  If there are babies in the nest, the nest cannot be disturbed.  Fall is a perfect time to be on the lookout if this problem is a current situation in the home.  The babies are leaving the nests in fall and it is the perfect time to clean out the nest debris before applying a bird control solution.

Bird control netting can be applied to the area to create a bird barrier so the pest bird cannot re-enter the same area.  Visual bird deterrents can also be placed near the area.  Visual bird deterrents consist of bird diverters and flash tape.  Both act as a visual scare tactic that will be a disturbance for the pest birds.  They will want to avoid the area where the visual bird deterrents are.  Flash tape has a shiny reflective surface that acts as an irritant to the bird.  It confuses them and frightens them away.  The diverters also have the same outcome of frightening the pest bird away.  They also have a shiny reflective surface, but there is also a design on the diverter that acts as a “mock” predator eye.  The birds will want to fly away from what they perceive as danger.

Another area around the roof that should have a bird control system is place is the rain gutters and drains.  Pest birds cause considerable damage in this area.  The pest birds can build the nests in the gutters and drains which can cause the water to build up and leak into the roofing area causing widespread damage to the roof.  Bird spikes and gutter spikes can be applied to keep the unwanted nuisance bird out of the gutter and drains.  Both spikes are simple to install and will last seasons as they are weather resistant, made to withstand the elements of winter.  Fall is the perfect time to winterize the home, including bird control maintenance.

Other structural damage can be caused by the bird droppings.  Bird droppings are very acidic.  The droppings can eat away many types of materials.  Appropriate bird proofing can eliminate damage the bird droppings leave behind, not just structurally.  Many health concerns for humans are associated with bird droppings.  The most serious health risks arise from disease organisms that grow in the nutrient-rich accumulation of bird droppings and debris under a roost.  Parasites can be a problem.  It can invade buildings and bite humans. Histoplasmosis is another serious concern to humans.  It is caused by a fungus.  Airborne spores transmit the disease to humans from the contaminated bird droppings. Infection occurs when spores are inhaled.  Ticks, mites and bedbugs can all become a problem associated with the pest bird.

Protecting the roof of your home will help keep the roof solid over your head and also keep you healthy.  Bird control solutions such as bird spikes and bird netting are simple to apply, and will last all winter long.  Birds will fly on by and leave your roof alone.

Backyard Bird Control Solutions

Tuesday, October 5, 2010 by Kathy Fritsch
bird control for the backyardBird troubles at home can be a real bother; fruit on trees and bushes being eaten before you can pick them and bird droppings all over your front walkway and backyard patio.  To solve a bird problem effectively, the species of bird must first be determined.  Sometimes the only determination needed is if the problem bird is a small bird or a larger bird.

The House Sparrow is a very common bird found in most neighborhoods.   They are classified as a smaller bird.  Do not let their smaller size fool you.  They are quite an aggressive migratory pest bird.  This pest bird is known to threaten and attack many other native birds in the area.  These noisy problem birds congregate in large flocks and can be quite troublesome.  Their nests are known to cause flooding and backups in gutters and drainage pipes.

Pigeons are also common around many homes.  They are the most common urban pest bird there is.  This larger sized bird can cause quite a mess where they roost causing damage to any structure they roost on.  They are known to nest in flat areas away from the ground.  Ledges, window sills and air conditioning units are common places for the pest pigeon nests.  Bird control products such as bird netting,  bird gel as well as bird spikes and bird slopes can keep both the smaller bird and larger bird away from your property.

Bird Netting

Polypropylene bird netting is durable netting that can be placed over fruit trees and garden plants.  This low profile bird control product prevents all bird species from having access to the desirable fruits and vegetables.  Bird netting is a bird deterrent that is virtually invisible.  The birds, however, will view this lightweight netting as a very strong physical barrier.

Bird Gel

Bird gel is a transparent bird deterrent that works for both small and large pest birds.  It can be used on any vertical surface the birds roost; ledges, signs, pipes and beams.  The transparent bird gel causes a non-toxic sticky surface that any bird would absolutely hate.  It creates a very uncomfortable spot to land which will cause them to move to another location.

Bird Spikes and Bird Slopes

Bird spikes and gutter spikes can be extremely effective on larger pest birds.  Gutter spikes will keep the birds from building nests and clogging the gutters and drains.  They are very quick and easy to install.  It simply creates an un-even surface that the birds cannot land on.  Bird control solutions like bird spikes, whether it is plastic or stainless steel, will keep the nuisance birds away from rooflines, ledges, eaves, windowsills and awnings.  There are multiple areas around the home that would benefit in having bird spikes installed.  The birds spikes are virtually invisible so do not worry about looking like your home is a guarded fortress.  It will be guarded, but the only ones who will know it are you and the birds.

There are many effective and economical bird control solutions for deterring birds from unwanted areas.  Bird control products can be humane.  Bird control systems are safe for the feathered pests and all humans.

Bird Barriers Help Create a Safe Home Environment

Thursday, August 26, 2010 by Kathy Fritsch
bird barriersEvery year millions of dollars fly out of home owner’s hands to repair and replace parts of the home that the pest bird has damaged.  If there is no bird barrier or bird deterrent in place, it is highly likely the pest bird is doing damage around the home unbeknownst to the homeowner.  Some damage the homeowner will know immediately.  Crows, sparrows and other pest birds love to eat from the backyard garden.  They love to perch and roost on ledges and roofs in wait to peck at the fruit.  The damage that is not seen right away is the damage that nests and bird droppings create.  Bird nests and bird droppings can create many different types of issues around the home.  All birds love to build their nests in hidden away areas.  With bird nests, perching and roosting comes bird droppings.  Bird droppings can create not only structural damage but health problems as well.

Getting rid of the bird problems is an easy Saturday afternoon project.  Of course, putting into place bird barriers and bird deterrents before any situation arises is always best.  If you are not fortunate enough to have the barriers or deterrents in place before the problem is noticed, there are broad spectrum hospital grade cleaners like Microcide SQ that will clean, disinfect and deodorize the problem areas.  It is effective against bacteria, mold and yeast and can even guard against over 100 disease causing viruses.  The disinfectant is very easy to use.  It is sprayed directly onto the soiled areas, thoroughly wetting the area. Let it sit on the surface for 10 minutes and wipe up the area with a damp cloth.  It would be wise to wear protection such as gloves and scarf over the nose and mouth region.  Accumulated bird droppings are a nutrient rich environment for many disease organisms to grow.  Histoplasmosis is one of the fungus’ that can be transmitted to humans.  Respiratory infection can occur when spores are carried by the air and then inhaled.  All the diseases’ that can arise from bird droppings is a good reason to make sure the problem does not come back.

The other reason bird control is important to have at home is the damage to structural materials that the bird droppings generate.    Bird feces are extremely acidic and can eat away wood structures, tar-based roofing materials, even paint and metals.  Bird barriers such as bird spikes, gutter spikes and bird netting will protect against unwanted damage by not allowing the birds to perch, roost and nest where they are likely to be.  Bird spikes and gutter spikes protect in the same manner.  They both create an uneven surface that does not allow the bird to perch or roost, causing the bird to fly away and find a different spot.  The gutter spikes will also not allow the birds to nest in the gutter area.  Bird netting is very versatile.  It can be placed in almost in area to block the birds.  If there is a gap anywhere on the roof, bird netting can help get rid of the birds by not allowing them to enter.

Bird barriers or deterrents are never intended to harm the birds in anyway.  They are safe and humane for feathered friends and family members.  A home should be the sanctuary of humans, not a bird sanctuary.
